The story begins with Balram deciding to accompany Maharaj Gajapati on his sacred Ekadashi vrat—a fast undertaken with pure devotion to Lord Jagannath.
Maharaj Gajapati, known for his discipline and faith, observes the vrat with sincerity and invites Balram to witness the rituals. Together, they meditate, chant, and perform all the holy observances, looking forward to the final moment when they can break the fast with a humble offering.
A Sinister Plot
But peace doesn’t last long. From the neighboring kingdom, Padosi Raja Jathavedas, driven by greed for Puri, hatches a sinister plan. He sends a mysterious Baba—an ascetic who is secretly an assassin—to disrupt the king’s vrat and ultimately eliminate him.
Disguised in holy attire, the Baba arrives in Puri, seeking an opportunity to strike. However, Maharaj Gajapati, unaware of the threat, treats the Baba with great respect and even invites him to partake in the Ekadashi bhojan (feast) after the fast.
The Disappearing Baba
As the vrat nears its conclusion, the Baba excuses himself for a ritual bath, a common practice. But he doesn’t return on time. The sun begins to set, and Gajapati and Balram, respecting the rules of the fast, break their vrat with simple food offerings to Lord Jagannath.
Suddenly, the Baba reappears—furious and full of rage. He accuses the king of breaking the fast without feeding him first, claiming it as an insult. In a flash, his true identity is revealed as he conjures a fiery spear, aiming to strike down the king.
Sudarshan Chakra’s Intervention
Just as chaos threatens to unfold, the skies darken and a divine light appears. From it emerges Sudarshan Chakra, the celestial weapon of Lord Jagannath. Radiating divine energy, it stops the spear mid-air and confronts the fake Baba.
